Waterborne illness is a huge obstacle for children in developing cities, causing illness and limiting their potential. We regularly find, in the schools, hospitals, orphanages, and feeding centers where we work in Cambodia, unsafe levels of contaminants in the tap water--contaminants that can and do make children sick. We solve this problem by installing and maintaining world-class water purification systems at children's institutions, and providing training & support to each site.
90% of the 3 million people who die every year due to waterborne illness are children under the age of 5. Children in Cambodia suffer acutely and regularly from diseases like giardia and E. Coli infection--diseases that can be greatly reduced simply by providing clean water, and even more so if paired with good hygiene.
This funding will support clean water projects in schools, orphanages, feeding centers, and medical clinics in some of Cambodia's poorest urban communities. Splash's intervention rids the water of 99.999% of viruses and other pathogens--essentially taking dirty water and making it clean and safe for drinking and hand washing.
Your support will: reduce illness and days of school missed; improve health and thereby greatly increase each child's chance to fulfill his or her maximum potential; impact the entire community when children take clean water and healthy behaviors home and; in many cases, give the larger community access to our free, clean water. It will also help supply spare parts, maintenance, education, and training for each site for 10 years, and position site owners to take over ownership by year 11.
