Summary

Ocean Defenders Alliance (ODA) is your clean-up crew for the seas: We clean and protect marine ecosystems for you. We focus primarily on the removal of man-made debris posing serious threats to ocean wildlife & habitat. This project will enable ODA volunteers to continue "clean-up" tons of trash and retrieve 1000's of feet of trap/fishing line, ghost nets, and traps from the ocean and beaches in California and Hawaii. Coastal waters will be cleaner and safer allowing wildlife to thrive!

Challenge

Oceans are more polluted than ever with plastics and other man-made debris. Major causes of these problems include abandoned fishing equipment (ghost gear) and other harmful debris that indiscriminately traps or (if ingested) starves ocean life resulting in death. This mostly-toxic-plastic gear ruins habitats and continues to injure & kill wildlife for hundreds of years. The type of debris ODA removes includes (but is not limited to): fishing lines, nets, traps, plastic and trash of all kinds.

Solution

Your support of this project will enable ODA to clean-up tons of debris. Our debris-removal activities create immediate positive change for the ecosystems we serve! In 2020, ODA will conduct 20+ life-saving, debris-removal expeditions and numerous harbor/inland waterway cleanups. With donors' help through GlobalGiving, we'll remove a minimum of 10,000 pounds of nets and other debris from the ocean and retrieve 12,000+ feet of trap/fishing line from the ocean in 2020.

Long-Term Impact

After an ODA debris-removal project, ocean wildlife thrives. Marine plants and animals are safer because their environment is free of dangers and healthier. The trap lines that entangles whales are gone. The lobster traps that imprison wildlife are gone. The nets that capture and kill all kinds of fish, seabirds, and marine mammals are out of harm's way. Debris that emits toxins in the water -- like plastics & batteries -- is removed. In many cases, the area remains free of debris indefinitely.
