Summary

This project will correct the age-related near-vision loss (otherwise known as presbyopia) of 500,000 impoverished Peruvians aged 65 and older over the next two years. It will ensure that these individuals have access to the vision services and glasses they need to restore their vision. This project begins in Q4 2022 and concludes in Q4 2024. We are currently fundraising for Q4 2022, when we will provide vision screenings and glasses to 75,000 people.

Challenge

One billion people globally have vision issues. Of these, 826 million have presbyopia, which can be corrected with a pair of glasses. However, 90% live in low- and middle-income countries lacking glasses delivery channels, discretionary income to afford a pair, or both. The aging population in Latin America and the Caribbean is growing and expected to increase 20% by 2050. With this project, RestoringVision will ensure poor Peruvians 65+ years old have equitable access to the glasses they need.

Solution

RestoringVision creates channels to access vision services and glasses for some of the most impoverished people worldwide. In Peru, we partner with Management Sciences for Health Peru (MSH), an affiliate of MSH U.S. (a leading global health non-profit), and Peru's government program "Pension 65". This program provides poor Peruvians 65+ years old with food assistance and social services. Our project will bring vision screenings and reading glasses to this population to address presbyopia.

Long-Term Impact

This project will correct presbyopia for 500,000 impoverished Peruvians ages 65 and older over the next two years. In doing so, they will be able to live more productive, independent, and safe lives. In the long term, we aim to create ongoing and sustainable access to vision services and glasses for this population beyond 2024 through our partnership with MSH Peru.
