The changing weather and climatic patterns continue to pose hazards and disasters to food security in northern Uganda. There is need for a proactive and holistic approach to combat the challenges presented by these changes. This project will develop climate change information management and early warning systems for Northern Uganda. The project will play a vital role in informing policy and provide the information bank for farmers to improve agriculture in northern Uganda.
Uganda continues to experience unpredictable rainfall patterns and high average temperatures. These climatic variabilities impact negatively on food security as well as the general livelihoods of people. Oxfam (2008) reports that in the last 20 years, Uganda has experienced seven droughts with regular incidences of extreme temperature, seasonal shifts and reduction of rainfall.
This project sets out to develop climate change information management systems and early warning systems for Acholi, Lango and West Nile sub regions of Northern Uganda. It is expected that this project will play a vital role in informing policy and act as an information bank on climate issues to interested parties within the economy e.g. farmers, aviation industry, local population, etc.
The project will promote climate change resilience in Uganda and East Africa through data driven information about climate change and variability. This will mine and produce a dependable databank that will feed into the regional and global weather and climate change statistics that will be made available for access by policy formulators, regional/International governments, key decision makers and partners. The information is useful in promoting livelihood and sustainable development.
