Climate vulnerable coastal community
Mundapa Jelekhally, Shyamnagar, Satkhira consists of 18 Munda families; a climate refugee group of people depends on day labor word for their livelihood. Most of them take ledge others land for one crop cultivation and if they miss to cultivate in time they suffer for the rest of the year. This year, the monsoon comes very late at Bangladesh and for that the terminal farmer failed to cultivate their farm land in due time. Again, it is predicted that the winter in Bangladesh will come soon and that also shrinks the farm cultivation time. The ledge farmers or day labors of Mundapara are now worried about how they will feed their family for the whole year and how they will cover the other household expenses. The people of Mundapara are extreme vulnerable due to climate change for their livelihood and drinking water. They need support to make this community climate resilience and disaster ready.

Capacity building of local community

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, as well as one of the most disaster-prone countries. This is said that “A person living in the region is 4 times riskier than those in Africa and 25 times than in Europe or North America”. The Sundarbans (the world’s single largest mangrove forest and UNESCO World Heritage Site) is situated in a region prone to a high incidence of cyclonic storms. Over the past two centuries the coastal areas and offshore islands of Bangladesh, to which the majority of the Sundarbans belong, have been affected by more than 35 severe cyclones and storm surges.
In response to climate change and frequent catastrophic events BEDS together with Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) members are working to strengthen the capacity of local coastal villagers who are more susceptible to damage due to cyclones. They are teaching them pre-during and post-disaster preparedness so that the villagers can mitigate the loss due to natural disasters. Disaster vulnerable community and their problems

The Sundarbans is situated in a region prone to a high incidence of natural calamities due to it’s geographic location. Every year cyclones visit this area increasing the difficulties of the local community. Most of the people adjacent to Sundarbans are forest dwellers and they depend on the forest for their life and livelihood.
BEDS along with Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) are working together to minimize the disaster loss and misery. BEDS identified the problems of Mathurapur village and presented that in problem tree with the active involvement of the local community. In the problem tree, natural disasters like river erosion, flooding, cyclones, storm surge, saline water intrusion and droughts were highlighted. There are also some social problems and man-made disasters. The major social problem is poverty. Their life has become miserable in the cycle of poverty and the havoc of disasters.
