Challenge

The climate crisis strikes communities unevenly: a migrant on the outskirts of town will face a hurricane differently than a person near the medical center. Those who are often most impacted by disaster are essential members of our communities - farmworkers, domestic workers, construction workers. Many become the workforce we rely on to restore housing, reactivate our water and power systems, and rebuild our transportation infrastructure after disasters.

Solution

Health justice is essential to our climate resilience. Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) works across the US, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to lead communities in building climate plans that include those who are often left out and marginalized. Geography, language, culture, poverty, immigration status, and other barriers can limit their access to disaster services including essential health care. We work to bridge these gaps - restoring a community's capacity to rebuild.

Long-Term Impact

MCN's climate initiative combats structural racism and environmental injustice with training, technical assistance, resources, and strategies so communities and community health centers (CHCs) can build hyperlocal, hyper-inclusive responses to climate disaster. CHCs can be the focal point for mobilizing recovery. MCN prepares CHC clinicians and outreach workers to move into the community and prioritize care for those often overlooked or who have limited access to assistance.
