Supporting HCs and Workers in Climate Emergencies

By Sonia Alvarado | Project Support

The funds that Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) receives through GlobalGiving continue to be impactful, as we work tirelessly to equip people across the US, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands with the tools they need to stay safe during a climate disaster. A key part of these efforts was the August training MCN offered in Puerto Rico, regarding health impacts on populations before, during, and after emergencies.

MCN understands the impact that the climate crisis will continue to have in our communities, and that it does not affect all populations equally. To help support the health centers, often the first to serve affected communities, MCN offered a seminar with the goal of improving clinical staff capacity to identify, inform, and care for the special populations most affected by climate emergencies. In this instance, these are mainly the migrant populations that work on the ground during preparation, emergency response, and recovery. At the conclusion, MCN provided culturally appropriate emergency preparedness resources related to risks posed by extreme weather events, and impacts on patients with chronic diseases. Regarding this webinar, one participant commented, translated from Spanish, “I liked that the information was clear, complete, and aligned with the current climate situation”.

Additionally, the webinar, “Managing Environmental Hazards and Mental Health and Well-being in Post Hurricane Recovery”, is taking place later this month. This session will focus on equipping workers, volunteers, and community members with the necessary tools to manage environmental, occupational, and mental health risks during the recovery phase following a hurricane.

Thanks to your continued support, MCN can offer these important learning opportunities, as well as other necessary resources, to the communities that need them most. We appreciate your contributions.
