Migrant Clinicians Network (MCN) continues its efforts to support communities across the US, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands to prepare, respond and recover from climate-related emergencies. We recognize the essential role of clinicians in promoting community preparedness, particularly those working in high-risk industries, farmworkers and construction workers.
To help support the community health centers, the primary health care delivery site providing care to farmworkers and their families, MCN partnered with the National Center for Farmworker Health to offer a national webinar with the goal of improving clinical staff capacity to identify, inform, and care for farmworkers most affected by hurricanes. In this instance, these are mainly the migrant populations that work in the agricultural industry and present the challenges of migration. At the conclusion, MCN provided culturally appropriate hurricane preparedness resources related to risks posed to workers after the hurricanes and during recovery including exposure to extreme heat, mold and mildew, and chemicals. The resources offered low-literacy messaging regarding the health effects of these exposures and how to prevent exposure.
Additionally, MCN continues to offer technical assistance responsive to health center and clinical requests for resources, information and best practices to share with patients and communities in preparation to the upcoming hurricane season.
