1. Introduction
During the reporting period, Save a Life has continued to provide critical support to communities affected by climate-related disasters in Sri Lanka. Our efforts focused on providing immediate relief to those impacted by recent floods, droughts, and landslides, particularly in rural and vulnerable areas. With the support of the Climate Disaster Relief Fund, we delivered aid including providing sanitary pads and other services to affected communities in the North and Eastern provinces. Our goal is to help rebuild the lives of those who have been displaced, while also working on longer-term strategies for climate resilience.
2. Key Activities
Sanitary Supplies Distribution in Northern and Eastern Provinces:
In response to the emergency in the Northern and Eastern provinces, we distributed sanitary pads to women and girls in affected communities, ensuring they have access to essential hygiene products during this challenging time. These supplies are vital for maintaining health and dignity, particularly for those who have been displaced or have limited access to basic resources. The distribution was part of our broader efforts to support vulnerable populations in the aftermath of the disaster.
Pampers Distribution for Differently-Abled Individuals During the Emergency Natural Disaster:
In response to the emergency caused by the natural disaster in the Northern provinces, we distributed pampers to differently- bled individuals to address their unique hygiene needs. These essential supplies are crucial for ensuring dignity, health, and comfort, particularly for those with limited mobility who are often more vulnerable in such situations. Our effort aims to provide immediate relief to the differently-abled community during this challenging time.
3. Challenges Faced
Lack of Communication with Remote Areas:
One of the key challenges faced during this period was the lack of communication with remote areas. Due to a lack of phone connectivity and network issues, reaching these communities with necessary updates and support became difficult. These communication barriers led to delays in aid distribution.
Financial Constraints:
Another significant challenge was the financial constraints at the time. Due to a lack of sufficient funds, providing the necessary aid in the required amounts and within the needed timeframe was challenging. This limited our ability to deliver timely and adequate assistance.
Need for Sustainable and Regular Support:
While immediate relief efforts were successful, the need for sustainable and regular support is equally crucial. Long-term solutions for community recovery and growth, including infrastructure improvements and livelihood development, need to be implemented to ensure these communities can recover fully and build resilience.
4. Impact on the Community
Health and Dignity:
Providing essential hygiene products like sanitary pads and pampers ensures that individuals, especially women and differently-abled people, maintain their health and dignity. This reduces the risk of infections and other hygiene-related health issues, while also preventing the emotional and psychological stress that can arise from a lack of basic hygiene during a disaster.
Support and Inclusion:
The distribution helps support vulnerable groups, particularly women, girls, and differently-abled individuals, by addressing their specific needs. It ensures they are included in the relief efforts, empowering them to maintain their daily routines, health, and well-being, which is crucial for community resilience and long-term recovery.
5. Plans for the Next Quarter
Awareness Campaigns and Capacity Building:
We plan to launch awareness campaigns in vulnerable areas, educating communities about climate change impacts and how to better prepare for future disasters. Training programs will also be introduced to teach families how to manage water and agricultural resources efficiently.
Expansion of Relief Activities:
We intend to expand relief efforts to districts in Sri Lanka, including providing access to emergency shelters for families in need and improving healthcare access for rural populations.
