Monthly Report: Climate Disaster Relief Fund in Sri Lanka - #67920
Project Title: Climate Disaster Relief Fund for Sri Lanka
Reporting Month: July to November
1. Introduction
During the reporting period, Save a Life has continued its mission to support communities impacted by climate-related disasters across Sri Lanka. Our interventions focused on delivering immediate relief to individuals and families affected by floods and landslides, particularly in rural and high-risk areas. With the backing of the Climate Disaster Relief Fund, we distributed essential aid, including sanitary pads, dry food, and other vital resources, to vulnerable populations in the Northern Province. Our efforts aim not only to provide urgent assistance to those displaced or affected but also to contribute to long-term recovery and enhance community resilience against future climate-related challenges.
2. Key Activities
Sanitary Supplies Distribution in Northern Province:
As part of our ongoing humanitarian assistance, we organized targeted outreach sessions alongside the sanitary pad distribution to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene management. These sessions helped women and girls understand proper hygiene practices, especially in emergency conditions where facilities are limited. By combining essential supplies with practical guidance, we aimed to reduce health risks and promote overall well-being within the affected communities. This integrated approach ensured that recipients not only received the necessary products but were also empowered with knowledge to manage their health confidently during the crisis.
Dry foods distribution for affected individuals in northern province.
We provided dry food distribution to affected individuals in the Northern Province, ensuring timely support to families facing hardship. The distribution focused on delivering essential dry food items to meet the immediate needs of vulnerable households. Through coordinated efforts with local authorities and community volunteers, we ensured that the supplies reached the most impacted areas efficiently and fairly. This initiative aimed to reduce food insecurity, support recovery, and strengthen the well-being of the affected communities during a challenging period.
Providing saw cutter electric cutting machine
During the reporting period, we provided an electric saw cutter machine to support communities in the Northern Province. This equipment will assist in construction and maintenance activities, improving efficiency and safety for local projects.
3. Challenges Faced
• Logistical Difficulties
Damaged roads, limited transport, and restricted access delayed the distribution of dry foods and sanitary pads. In some areas, vehicles could not reach beneficiaries, requiring manual carrying and multiple trips. These issues increased workload and costs, though coordinated efforts ensured supplies reached vulnerable households.
• Ensuring Fair Distribution
Managing large crowds, verifying beneficiary lists, and preventing duplication required strong coordination. Limited resources meant prioritizing vulnerable groups. Maintaining transparency was essential to avoid misunderstandings, and organized systems were used to ensure fair and accountable distribution.
• Safety and Security Concerns
Crowded distribution points posed risks of disputes and injuries. Field staff also worked in unstable environments with limited security. Close coordination with local authorities, controlled distribution points, and crowd-management measures helped ensure safety for both staff and beneficiaries.
4. Impact on the Community
• Health and Well-being
Providing food items improved nutritional intake, while sanitary pads supported safe menstrual hygiene. These contributions reduced health risks and strengthened overall well-being during emergency conditions.
• Protection of Vulnerable Groups
The initiative prioritized displaced families, low-income households, women, and children. Targeted support ensured their immediate needs were met, enhanced dignity, and helped reduce risks faced during the disaster.
5. Plans for the Next Quarter
As Sri Lanka remains in the emergency response phase following the catastrophic Ditwah cyclone, the upcoming quarter will focus on both immediate relief and long-term support.
• Continued Emergency Relief
We will continue targeted relief activities, strengthen coordination with local authorities, improve distribution efficiency, and enhance support systems to better assist vulnerable groups during the ongoing crisis. As part of long-term relief, we are also collecting sanitary essentials, bed sheets, and other hygiene items for affected communities.
• Stationery Support Initiative – Central Province
We plan to distribute essential stationery items to students and schools in the Central Province to support learning continuity. This initiative will prioritize underserved schools and low-income students, helping reduce educational disparities and ensuring that children have the necessary materials for their studies.
• Clothing Support to Central Province
Under the Climate Disaster Relief Fund, we will distribute collected clothing items to vulnerable families in the Central Province. This support aims to address immediate needs, improve comfort, and assist households affected by ongoing climate-related challenges.
