Summary

Royal Aid for Development (ROAD) is launching a 24-month project in South Sudan's Upper Nile State to combat climate shocks, food insecurity, and GBV. In Panyikang, Fashoda, and Manyo, the project will restore 120 hectares of wetlands and support 1,200 households. Key actions include stabilizing 15km of riverbanks, building 3 solar fish hubs, and opening 12 Farmer/Fisher Schools. A mandatory 50% women's leadership rule lowers GBV risks and secures resource peace

Challenge

South Sudan's Upper Nile State (Panyikang, Fashoda, and Manyo Districts/counties) faces systemic poverty, conflict, and a severe protection crisis. Catastrophic White Nile River flooding, droughts, and deforestation collapse riverbanks, submerge farmlands, and ruin fish stocks. This fuels intense resource conflict over dwindling lands. Forced to walk long distances into unsafe terrains for firewood and water, women face heightened exposure to Gender-Based Violence (GBV)

Solution

The project solves the crisis through four integrated steps: Halts Floods: Stabilizes 15km of riverbanks using bio-engineering and restores 120 hectares of wetlands to absorb excess floodwaters. Secures Food: Establishes 12 Farmer/Fisher Schools with flood-adapted seeds to restore farming and fish breeding. Stops Deforestation: Builds 3 solar-powered fish hubs to eliminate the need for wood-curing. Lowers GBV: Implements a 50% women's leadership rule in resource governance

Long-Term Impact

Long-Term Impact: Permanent Ecosystem Resilience: Restoring 120 hectares of wetlands and 15km of bio-engineered riverbanks creates permanent, self-sustaining natural flood barriers. Generational Food & Economic Security: Shifting 1,200 households to clean, solar-powered fish hubs and climate-smart farming permanently breaks the cycle of aid dependency. Systemic Gender Equality: A mandatory 50% female leadership rule fundamentally transforms resource governance, permanently lowering GBV
