Summary

Today one in five people are living in poverty in the UK. The nature of poverty has changed over time, so the ways we tackle poverty must change too. Our society has a shared responsibility to work together to solve this problem. This project will provide 200 people sleeping rough or living in poverty with vouchers to be redeemed at a charity shop in exchange for basic clothing to protect and keep them warm. Our vouchers also financially benefit the charity shops cause. A win-win senario.

Challenge

71% of local authorities participating in this year's LA survey reported that homelessness had been recently increasing. The rise since 2010 in the number of households made homeless by the ending of private tenancies seems to have peaked but homelessness temporary accommodation placements have continued to rise. Since 2010 rough sleeping appears to still be rising in three of England's four broad regions, including London, Birmingham and Manchester. Report by Crisis and JRF,

Solution

Here at Clothe Me - Thank You our aim is to make the basic human right of clothing accessible to people who need it most. We make this possible by using the money we raise to create vouchers that can be exchanged for clothes in the charity shops we are partnered with. The voucher system which we operate ensures both people and organisations benefit from our activity. Most importantly we make clothing accessible to vulnerable members of our society.

Long-Term Impact

As a society, we believe work should provide a route out of poverty. Yet despite record employment rates in the UK, the number of people trapped in poverty in working families has risen by over one million in the three years to 2016/17. This means almost three million children are now locked in poverty despite living in a working family. The situation is set to worsen further in future. This is simply not right. Partnering with foodbanks we provide an additional resource to those people in need.
