CLUB 10 INITIATIVE: Clean Water and Sanitation

Executive Summary:

Hifadhi Africa organization is committed to promoting health and well-being in underserved communities, recently conducted a significant initiative in East Pokot. The organization successfully distributed sanitary pads to girls in schools, aiming to address menstrual hygiene challenges and promote sanitation. This effort was made possible through generous donations received on the GlobalGiving platform.

Background:

East Pokot, like many other regions, faces challenges related to menstrual hygiene management, particularly among school-going girls. Limited access to sanitary products often leads to absenteeism and poses a threat to the overall well-being and education of these young individuals. Recognizing this issue, Hifadhi Africa took the initiative to provide sanitary pads to alleviate the challenges faced by girls in the area.

Objective of the Initiative:

The primary goal of the sanitation initiative was to improve menstrual hygiene management among girls in schools in East Pokot. By distributing sanitary pads, Hifadhi Africa aimed to address the following key objectives:

-Promoting Health and Hygiene: Access to sanitary pads contributes significantly to maintaining proper hygiene during menstruation, reducing the risk of infections, and promoting overall health.

-Enhancing Education: By addressing menstrual hygiene challenges, the organization aimed to reduce school absenteeism among girls. This, in turn, contributes to an improved educational experience and long-term prospects for the beneficiaries.

-Empowering Girls: The distribution of sanitary pads goes beyond the physical product; it empowers girls by acknowledging and addressing their unique needs. This initiative aims to instill confidence and a sense of dignity among the recipients.

Implementation:

The distribution of sanitary pads in East Pokot was made possible through the generosity of donors on the GlobalGiving platform. Hifadhi Africa collaborated with local schools to identify beneficiaries and ensure that the distribution was conducted in an organized and equitable manner.  HAO distributed 200 menstrual kits to 200 girls within East Pokot.

Each menstrual hygiene kit for the girls in East Pokot will contain the following items:

• Sanitary Pads (5 pads): High-quality, absorbent pads that provide protection during menstruation.
• Undergarments (5 pairs): Comfortable and well-fitting underwear to securely hold the pads in place.
• Vaseline Jelly: A skin protectant to prevent chafing and irritation during periods.
• Bathing Soap (1 bar): Hygiene is crucial, and soap ensures proper cleaning and reduces the risk of infection.

The distribution process involved:

-Needs Assessment: Hifadhi Africa collaborated with local authorities and school administrators to assess the specific needs of girls in the target area.

-Logistics Planning: The organization coordinated logistics for the transportation, storage, and distribution of sanitary pads to various schools in East Pokot.

-Awareness and Education: In addition to the distribution of sanitary pads, educational sessions were conducted to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and provide information on proper usage and disposal of sanitary products.

Challenges and Lessons Learned:

While the initiative was largely successful, it is crucial to acknowledge challenges faced and lessons learned during implementation. These may include logistical hurdles, cultural considerations, or unforeseen issues that could inform future initiatives and improvements in the approach.
