Project Development: Sump well construction in East Pokot

By Margaret Wambui | Project Leader

Project Overview

Hifadhi Africa Organization (HAO) successfully completed the construction of a sump well in East Pokot, a region that has long struggled with water scarcity. This project, made possible through generous donations via the GlobalGiving platform, aimed to provide the local community with a reliable water source. The funds were specifically used to cement and cover the sump well, ensuring its durability and safety for long-term use.

Background

East Pokot is an arid region in Kenya where access to clean and safe water is a significant challenge. The scarcity of water has severe implications for the community, affecting health, hygiene, agriculture, and overall well-being. The construction of a sumpwell was identified as a crucial intervention to alleviate the water crisis in this area.

Project Implementation

The project was carried out in several key phases:

  1. Site Selection and Preparation: The first step involved selecting an appropriate location for the sumpwell, ensuring it was easily accessible to the community while being strategically positioned to collect and store water effectively.
  2. Construction: Once the site was prepared, the construction team began excavating the sumpwell. This involved digging to a depth sufficient to tap into underground water sources. The walls of the sumpwell were then reinforced with high-quality cement to prevent collapse and ensure structural integrity.
  3. Cementing: The donated funds were primarily used to cement the sumpwell, which is critical for maintaining its structure and preventing contamination. The cement lining also helps in preventing water seepage, ensuring that the collected water is retained for use.
  4. Covering: To protect the sumpwell from external contaminants, such as debris, animals, and potential pollutants, a sturdy cover was installed. This cover also helps in preventing accidents, particularly for children and livestock, ensuring the safety of the community members.

Community Involvement

Throughout the project, community members were actively involved in the construction process. This not only provided them with employment opportunities but also ensured that they had a sense of ownership and responsibility for the maintenance of the sumpwell. The involvement of local leaders and stakeholders was crucial in mobilizing community support and participation.

Impact

The completion of the sumpwell has had a significant impact on the community in East Pokot:

  1. Improved Water Access: The sumpwell now provides a reliable source of water for drinking, cooking, and other domestic uses. This has reduced the time and effort previously spent in searching for water, particularly for women and children.
  2. Enhanced Health and Hygiene: With easier access to clean water, there has been a noticeable improvement in hygiene practices within the community. This is expected to lead to a reduction in waterborne diseases and overall better health outcomes.
  3. Support for Livelihoods: The availability of water has also supported local agriculture, allowing for small-scale irrigation and the watering of livestock, which are critical for the community's food security and income.

Sustainability and Future Plans

HAO is committed to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sumpwell. The organization plans to work closely with the community to establish a management committee responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the sumpwell. Additionally, HAO will conduct periodic training sessions on water conservation and hygiene practices to maximize the benefits of the sumpwell.

Conclusion

The successful completion of the sumpwell in East Pokot, funded by GlobalGiving donations, marks a significant milestone in addressing the water challenges faced by the community. This project is a testament to the power of collective action and community-driven development. HAO will continue to monitor the impact of the sumpwell and explore further opportunities to support the community in East Pokot.
