Senior citizens (legally recognized in Colombia from the age of 60, but also including 50+ in conditions of vulnerability) make up 14% of the population in Colombia, and by 2050, they are expected to exceed 25%. In 2020, 63.7% of this population did not use the internet, citing lack of digital skills and perceived lack of usefulness as the main limitations.
With the 4th industrial revolution, digital illiteracy has become one of the main reasons for job exclusion in Colombia. In line with this trend, a report from Fundación 101 Ideas revealed that one of the greatest areas of interest in digital skills for older demographics is, precisely those needed for employability and entrepreneurship, as these are the key to upskill/reskill and access new employment/livelihood opportunities.
Last month, Makaia had the privilege of certifying its first cohort of older adults in basic digital literacy, as part of our efforts to give older adults over 50 the tech skills for employability readiness in the digital era. Thank you so much for your support. It is with your effort that we can all be a part of this next phase in their lives!
