Growing Up Safe: Providing Care and Protection at Casa Italia

Monitoring trip

Dear Donors,
At the end of October, Aleimar’s Country Representative traveled to Ghana for the monitoring visit, with the aim of meeting the children hosted at Casa Italia. Through this project, Aleimar works to fight against the social exclusion of children with disabilities and to improve the living conditions of children in situations of extreme vulnerability, ensuring their fundamental rights and providing a family-like environment that supports their growth and well-being.

All 19 children currently living at Casa Italia are in good health, and as always, it was a great joy to meet them and spend time together. Seven caregivers take care of the children every day: four support the older children and three are dedicated to the youngest ones. During the days spent at the center, we were able to share their daily routine, which includes school commitments and moments of play.

The rhythm of life at Casa Italia is shaped by daylight. The children wake up at dawn and, by 7 a.m., are ready to leave for school. On rainy days, when roads turn into streams of mud and become impassable, the center’s handyman accompanies them by pickup truck. Children who, due to their conditions, are unable to attend school remain at the center, where they receive constant care: they are washed, changed, accompanied to medical appointments when needed, and assisted during meals, often with the support of volunteers. In the afternoon, the children return from school, focus on homework, and then enjoy some time to play. Before nightfall, everyone takes a shower, has dinner, and goes to bed as the sun sets.

Within this stable routine, important transitions continue to take place. Some children are beginning a path of reintegration into family settings, which remains the primary goal of our intervention. During the visit, we were able to meet two children who have recently returned to their families. Thanks to your support, Aleimar will continue to accompany them, ensuring medical and economic assistance until they complete their education. For the other children, the search for a family solution is still ongoing, but the progress achieved in their personal development is very encouraging.

Just a few days before our arrival, three siblings were welcomed into Casa Italia: two girls, aged one month and two years, and a one-year-old boy. All three were severely malnourished and deeply affected by the difficult experiences they had already endured at such a young age. At this stage, the priority has been to meet their basic needs; over time, it will be possible to assess any potential health issues or disabilities.

Casa Italia continues to grow not only in care but also in functionality. Local volunteers have painted colorful murals that make the environment more welcoming for the children. The center has also been equipped with additional wheelchairs and a new stroller, allowing children with more severe disabilities to move more easily and take part in play activities. Furthermore, solar panels have been installed to respond to rising energy costs and ensure a more sustainable source of electricity.

Overall, the monitoring visit had a very positive outcome. We witnessed significant progress in the children’s journeys and, above all, a deep sense of serenity and joy. These achievements are possible thanks to your continued support. From all of us, thank you for the future you are helping to build for the children hosted at Casa Italia.

Be part of the volunteer journey to Ghana!

Leisure time together in the family home

Dear Friends,

With this report, we would like to share with you all the volunteer trip that took place in August. Aleimar volunteers Tamara and Basilio traveled to Ghana to “Casa Italia” for the second time, driven by their affection for the children and staff of local our partner “Chicchi di Caffè.”

Our volunteers were involved in the daily activities of the family home, especially in the game and sports activities held every afternoon and during free time.

Tamara and Basilio wanted to briefly report on their experience:

“As always, this was an unforgettable experience. We are very happy to see that, after a year, the children are doing well and have grown.

We stayed at Casa Italia during the school exam period. The younger elementary school children had four days of exams (one subject per day), while the older children had six challenging days of exams.

Life continues to flow at a well-defined pace. Every day, all the children wake up very early and leave home at 7 a.m. to go to school, returning home in the afternoon. In the afternoon, they do their homework and have free time dedicated to games and sports. We have noticed, from one year to the next, how children have become much more involved in daily household activities, according to their abilities and age. These activities are very important in order to make everyone feel part of the same home and to make the children more autonomous and independent. In fact, it is hoped that in the future they will be able to live independently outside of “Casa Italia,” and being able to carry out daily activities is fundamental.

We visited the school with the children several times to learn more about their everyday lives. We were delighted to see that the school has expanded and can now welcome more students (two classrooms). In addition, a new road has been built from the children's home to the school, allowing the children to reach it more quickly and safely, as it is no longer through the woods.

We take home with us lots of love and smiles.”

A Home, a Future, a Smile: Standing by Ghana's Children

Dear donors,

Our commitment to Ghana continues in support of Casa Italia. Although Ghana is one of the most stable and dynamic countries in West Africa, there are still inequalities between urban and rural areas, where access to quality services is often limited, and living conditions are more fragile. Poverty, especially in inland areas, remains one of the main challenges. The reality of Casa Italia, located in Kwamoso, a small village in the Eastern Region of Ghana, in the Akuapim North district, fits into this panorama. Kwamoso reflects many of the challenges common to rural contexts. Access to education is limited by structural shortcomings. There is a lack of teaching materials, adequate space and, often, qualified teaching staff. There is also no shortage of difficulties in terms of healthcare. There is no hospital in the village, and to receive medical care is necessary to reach facilities located several kilometers away. These challenges are increased by the many children who are abandoned, abused or mistreated, especially those with disabilities.

Casa Italia represents a safe place to protect children who come from situations of violence, abandonment, disability or extreme poverty. This structure guarantees them the possibility of having a home, offering them education, food, medical care, and the fundamental right to grow up in an adequate family environment. The children welcomed are a symbol of great strength and their stories teach the staff the ability to move forward and overcome obstacles. An example of this resilience is represented by the story of V., who survived an attempted neonatal poisoning and overcame epileptic seizures thanks to specific care provided within the center. Key concepts such as socialization and responsibility are also taught at Casa Italia. Older kids help the younger ones in daily activities and develop a culture of taking care of others. Educational support is essential given that many children have had traumatic experiences and recreational activities such as singing, storytelling and games help to stimulate self-esteem, expression and relationships.

Donor help is vital to cover daily costs, therapies, school and extra activities. We need your support with school expenses, treatments, medical aids, and specialist monitoring, given the high rate of children with disabilities welcomed.
