Project Report | Jul 20, 2023
European Journal of Wildlife Research publication

By Loretta Shepherd | Communications Coordinator

Thank you for your support. As you know from our previous reports to you, Vietnam is a key end use destination for illegally sourced live otters for the pet trade and otter fur for the fashion industry.

Our research paper from this project, by Lalita Gomez and Minh D. T. Nguyen in the European Journal of Wildlife Research has been published. In the paper, we discuss in detail how the trade of otters in Vietnam persists, in direct violation of Vietnam's wildlife laws and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The work to combat otter trafficking in Vietnam does not end here. Using the information we have put together, next steps must be urgently taken, particularly in-depth scrutiny of online sellers and where/who they are sourcing the live otters and otter fur and products from. Social media and other online advertising companies must be held accountable for facilitating illegal wildlife trade online, and to this end, policies and laws must be accordingly revised.

Read the full paper for insight into the issue, including what needs to be urgently changed in Vietnam: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10344-023-01707-w
