At the side of the elderly all year long Specchio dei tempi, the foundation created thanks to the solidarity of La Stampa readers, has been collaborating with the Bersezio Foundation for the past five years on the "Forza Nonni!" project, in memory of the work of Vittorio Bersezio, founder of the Gazzetta Piemontese (now "La Stampa"). This alliance has a noble purpose: to support hundreds of frail elderly in Piedmont and Liguria.
Across Italy, many elderly people live alone with limited financial resources and fragile support networks. Retirement often brings not only a reduced income, but also social isolation - especially for those who have lost a partner or whose families live far away. Loneliness is more than an emotional condition; it has serious effects on physical and mental health and can quickly lead to deeper vulnerability. Without regular social contact, everyday challenges such as grocery shopping.
Forza Nonni! creates moments of connection while providing practical support to elderly people experiencing loneliness and economic difficulty. Through community gatherings, shared meals, social activities, and dedicated initiatives, the project offers safe spaces where seniors can rediscover relationships, feel welcomed, and rebuild a sense of belonging. At the same time, participants receive concrete help when needed.
In the short term, the project reduces isolation and improves emotional well-being. Regular social interaction helps prevent depression and supports healthier, more active lives. Over time, Forza Nonni! strengthens community bonds and creates informal support networks that continue beyond the project itself. Elderly participants gain confidence, maintain independence longer, and remain active members of their communities.
