In today’s Italy, economic poverty and healthcare poverty are, unfortunately, two sides of the same coin, forcing more and more elderly people to live frugally, cutting back on food and postponing necessary medical treatment.
An in-depth feature published by La Stampa has shone a spotlight on this silent crisis in our region, detailing how Specchio dei tempi’s “Forza Nonni!” and “Tredicesime dell’Amicizia” projects are offering practical help to many Turin residents in extremely vulnerable circumstances. By providing home care, help with shopping, cleaning and medical appointments, the initiative takes direct action to offer practical support to those facing hardship in their later years.
The newspaper’s report gives a voice to those who, thanks to the generosity of our donors, have been able to regain their smile and dignity. Take Giuseppe, aged 84, who considered the dentures he needed to be an unattainable goal, before Specchio dei tempi stepped in to support him. Or like Teresa, aged 72, who had to wait two years before she could replace her progressive lenses because she could not afford them. Today, thanks to the project, she has finally received her new glasses at no cost, rediscovering the joy of seeing clearly and without discomfort.
