Gender based violence cases have increased with several deaths. A total of 3,280 cases were reported to police in Acholi sub region. In Amuru district, 324 defilement and rape cases were and 19 murder cases reported during lockdown. This project will raise awareness, hold radio talk shows & spot messages train 150 rwodi kweri & rwodi okoro (Community structures), hotline counselling, provision of medical services to victims of GBV. Its expected to reduce cases of GBV in communities.
As a result of COVID-19 lockdown, domestic violence have increased with several deaths.Between March 30 and April 28, a total of 3,280 cases of GBV were reported to police. A total of 324 defilement, rape and murder cases were reported in Amuru district in March and April 2020. This has been attributed due to economic and social stress as a result of loss of daily income, food insecurity, restricted movement, and social isolation measures. This project will reduce the prevalence of GBV.
Gender Links Initiative Uganda shall raise awareness through radio talk shows, spot messages, community awareness, and use of Information Education and Communication Materials, hotline counselling services to clients, medical support, networking and referrals and build the capacity of community structures and duty bearers to respond to the increased cases of domestic violence in the community. The duty bearers and community structures will share the new knowledge with other members.
The project will train 150 community structures and duty bearers to increase awareness, conduct mediation sessions, report cases of domestic violence in the community. Police expeditiously handled reported domestic violence cases at the sub county and community levels. Improved understanding and responsiveness of women and men to address the issue of gender based violence. Reduced cases of domestic violence reported in the community and police stations.
