Summary

Liberia is recovering from the worst Ebola outbreak of all time. We are working with thousands of Liberians in some of the poorest communities in the country and need your help to make sure a health crisis like this never happens again. For many years we've worked on the ground through our Community Justice Teams (CJTs) to build the trust and accountability that is critical to improve lives-- now help us to scale up the CJTs and build a better future for Liberia.

Challenge

After years of conflict, a lack of accountability in Liberia was the key reason why Ebola spread so quickly. Money for health centers and Ebola treatment had been stolen, Liberians did not believe the government's healthcare messages, and citizens did not trust people in power to protect them. Thousands of healthy people were infected because they did not have the information or systems needed to fight the disease.

Solution

Our Community Justice Teams (CJTs) are building accountability in communities to beat Ebola by solving disputes at the local level for thousands of people. This generates trust between citizens and among people and the government--so that information is shared, communities are united and Liberians are ready to deal with the challenges that they face. With your support, when the next outbreak occurs, Liberians will be ready and able to beat it quickly.

Long-Term Impact

This work builds the social fabric that is essential for Liberia to move beyond the conflict and crises of the past and towards a more prosperous, inclusive and safe future. As a result of the work our CJTs carried out to build trust in their communities, they were chosen as the key intermediaries with the government during the Ebola crisis: an example of the ways in which this work is critical to managing critical challenges. You can be part of an effort to truly transform lives in Liberia.
