In Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, KAP will treat 77 alcohol & substance abusing/addicted clients, their families & communities in their own community setting, in order to enable them overcome this life-wrecking condition in an affordable way, and live worthy lives. KAP does so by employing the successful psycho-social 'Steps to Healthy Living' treatment program, as developed by SAPTA/Nairobi, as well as professional counselling, especially for the materially poor households in slums and rural areas.
Abuse of and addiction to alcohol/drugs is a huge and fast increasing problem in Trans Nzoia County, also affecting many youths, even children. Locally-brewed gin (chang'aa), marijuana (bhang'), other concoctions, even heroin are easily accessible, sold and trafficked. This wrecks (young) people's lives & families and feeds other huge societal challenges such as HIV/AIDS & STIs, (political) violence of all sorts, etc. Most abusers cannot afford in-patient treatment, other options hardly exist.
KAP provides community-based treatment for people affected by substance use disorders (SUDs) by offering intensive treatment to new clients, and 'maintenance' activities for those who already completed this course. During family therapy days and home visits also the Clients' surroundings are helped to heal and prevent further addictions. Youths in the area are taught about abuse/addiction. KAP also offers continuous education & debriefing sessions for its staffs/counsellors & community trainers.
The project will help heal 77 Clients to overcome their alcohol/substance abuse, of whom an anticipated 55% with full recovery and 45% with considerable improvement. Improved also will be their hygiene, nutritional status, health & productivity, and decreased sexual infections, child abuse & violence. HIV testing & treatment adherence will improve. 336 family-, youths & community members will be educated to help heal & prevent addictions, refer & take ownership of their communal abuse problems.
