Update on AAFF's Computer Training Center for Afghan Girls

By Missy Simmons | Director of Organizational Development

Recently, 180 girls in grades 3-6 began our three-month computer training course throughout our three computer centers located in public schools in Afghanistan.

Our graduates from the last round were eager to share their success stories with us. We are always amazed at how their lives are changed by the course. Often, it is not just computer skills that they learn.

One student shared, “At first, I was hesitant to join this class because I am disabled. Since I was a child, my left hand has not developed properly; it is very small and only partially formed.

When I was younger, I often felt different from others, and even in school some of my classmates would ask questions about my condition, and some would make fun of me. Because of this, I was reluctant to go to new places where I might be questioned, as it made me feel inadequate.

However, my cousin, who is also in my class, encouraged me to attend the computer class, and I eventually agreed.

In the early days of class, I would sit in the corner and listen to the lessons while covering my hand with my scarf. I used my other hand to operate the keyboard and mouse.

I learned the lessons very well. However, I still didn’t actively participate in class discussions; I hesitated to raise my hand.

My teachers often asked me questions and encouraged me, which helped me feel more comfortable.

I no longer felt ashamed of my disability, and I stopped hiding my hand. This class taught me not only about computers but also helped me become more confident and empowered."
