Challenge

Vulnerable children are most and long-term affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Even before the pandemic, 50% of Ukrainian families with children lived below the poverty line. In such families, children often have physical, social and cognitive gap. Due to the quarantine in 2020, schools in Odesa have introduced distance learning, but because of the lack of necessary equipment, skills and the adult control, children from crisis families were completely excluded from the educational process.

Solution

At the Big Family Center for Rehabilitation and Social Adaptation the children can live, study and develop together in a friendly family environment, acquiring skills for independent successful life and catching up education. The computer equipment of the Center became obsolete. Replacing old PCs with new ones allows the children to study remotely, to search for information and to take a course on the basics of coding and computer literacy under the guidance of mentors.

Long-Term Impact

More than 50 children from crisis families a year will be able to catch up with schooling and to acquire computer and coding skills. This will help them in adapting to social environment, revealing their talents and self-actualizing. The Big Family Center helps vulnerable children to not end up on the streets or not to get at state shelters where living conditions are very bad. And parents can solve their problems and to improve relationships with children, increasing the family resilience.
