Challenge

A massive earthquake in Nepal - the worst in 80 years - has severely shaken the lives of at least 5.3 million people. Thousands are dead. Many of the survivors have lost everything. The government has declared a state of emergency and is calling for international support. In Kathmandu and surrounding areas, the earthquake has resulted in widespread damage and destruction of buildings, many of which have collapsed. The earthquake also damaged roads and other public infrastructure.

Solution

Help us meet the most urgent survival needs of the people of Nepal - clean water, shelter, and lifesaving health services. As an initial step, we immediately mobilized a shipment of shelter and hygiene kits for 2,000 families. Concern is linking with two former partners, RNN (Rural Reconstruction Nepal) and Nepal Water for Health. We aim to distribute shelter and hygiene supplies to 14,000 households.

Long-Term Impact

Our response is three-fold; we provide immediate assistance as the emergency unfolds, we help to rebuild and to rehabilitate in the weeks, months, and often years, after the emergency, and finally, we work with the world's most vulnerable communities to help them prepare for and build resilience to better cope when disasters hit in the future.
