Summary

CONEXION is a set of actions that Calicanto will start to provide the women graduated from our program CAPTA, the children from ENLACES, their parents and families with social, cultural, educational and recreational activities. The purpose is to offer a neutral and welcoming environment where they can meet and share experiences and it is intended to foster a sense of community among graduated CAPTA women and also between the parents of our ENLACES' kids that until now do not usually meet.

Challenge

We realized that if we fail to provide continuous attention to our foundation recipients, their chances of falling prey to the dangers in their communities increase significantly. The violence, drug trade, and gang activity in their communities are factors whose influence keeps them from escaping the cycle of poverty. CONEXION will benefit the direct beneficiaries of our programs but also their extended families as the activities planned will also address their needs.

Solution

Our CONEXION program provides the continuous support and tools needed to ensure that our graduates stay on the right path and also creates an opportunity to involve family members and friends in a one-day-a-month family day activity where all are exposed to educational seminars and fun-filled socially conscious activities that will provide an outlet to their every day life. CONEXION hopes to stimulate change in our community through a wide range of meaningful and educational activities.

Long-Term Impact

The educational activities proposed through CONEXION will make a lasting impact on all of our beneficiaries by fostering a sense of community and ensuring them that if they make mistakes or encounter problems, falling back into old habits is no longer a last resort. One of our most successful programs has been the English Club, tailored and taught by volunteers who use interactive methods to provide a fun learning experience and also a sense of belonging.
