The "Valparaiso Azul" Festival is the first public and environmental art biennial in the Valparaiso region. Its main objective is to integrate ocean culture through public artworks (murals), educational workshops, fostering awareness and citizen participation in ocean protection. The event will bring together nine national and one international artist and local ocean literacy experts, will be a cultural and educational milestone for the city of Valparaiso.
This project stems from the need to re-establish the relationship between the UNESCO world heritage town of Valparaiso and its marine environment. This historical port town has fallen in decay over the last decades, putting at risk its UNESCO status, affecting turism and alianating even its own inhabitants from its rich ocean history. Through art, the biennial seeks to regenerate this connection, erasing the physical barrier with the oce and making the ocean part of everyday life once again.
The initiative uses art as a powerful tool for inspiring people, raising awareness and promoting environmental education. By combining artistic expression with ocean culture, the festival will foster ocean literacy, creating an emotional connection and a sense of belonging within the community.
The Biennale will just be the beginning of a restauration process through art, where we will revitalize communities through art and ocean education. Restoring peoples connection with the ocean, with Valparaisos rich history, with the community, it will not only revitalize neighborhoods but also tourism and even safety, as the city has fallen to decay over the years, even putting at risk its UNESCO heritage status.
