Establishment of perennial crops recommended by the Department of Agriculture in 50 selected home gardens near the Kodigahakanda sanctuary and Reconstruction of 1500 m of nature trail to promote Ecotourism in Kodigahakanda sanctuary
1. Lack of productive use of community land near Kodigahakanda Sanctuary Community lands are located on steep slopes.When there is no rain, the community suffers from severe water shortage. Therefore, home gardening cannot be done on those lands. The lands have become barren due to heavy rains during the rainy 2. Community suffers from poverty. There are about 350 families living around the Kodigahakanda sanctuary and the majority of their livelihood is based on daily wage work and quarrying.
1. The project proposes to introduce commercially productive and low water consumption crops recommended by the Department of Agriculture. Steps are also taken to prevent soil erosion. 2. The perennial crops introduced will give them income throughout the year. The income from the surrounding community will also be enhanced by promoting ecotourism in the Kodigahahatanda Sanctuary. Village youth earn income as guides. Catering to incoming travelers will increase their standard of living .
Much of the potential of this project lies in its long-term outcomes. Increasing the productivity of land and introducing perennial crops which will generate year round income and Improving ecotourism in the Kodigahakanda sanctuary will also have a long-term impact on the quality of life of the community. Enhanced for the young people acting as guides. It will have a positive impact on them their future life.
