'Kamala' A starving Mother

By Ratiranjan Mahapatra | Program manager

If you live in a city and take time out to look around, you will observe that all the former grasslands converted to commercial or residential plots. On the one hand, our cities are losing their greens rapidly, and on the other hand, large species of domesticated animals like cows are losing their natural source of food and water.

These poor animals are completely dependent on humans for their wellbeing, but we often overlook the misery caused by us and keep using them for our benefit.

This story is about ‘Kamala,’ another sufferer of our selfish act. One day she searched for food as her owner did not care to feed properly after milking her. During the lactation period, every mother needs adequate nutrition to produce milk for her baby. Likewise, Kamala was starving and desperately looking for some food. After trying many places lastly, she found a garbage dump near a wired fenced field. The dump was very close to the barbed wire fence, and hungry Kamala did not realize that she put her leg through the fence. By the time she realized the pain, her leg was completely stuck between two fences, and she started bleeding profusely. Unfortunately, no one came up to help this poor girl, not even her owner. After few days of the injury, she started developing maggots in her wound as it was open, and her owner left her on the street. Thankfully, her painful situation and the nasty injury drew the attention of few local rescuers, and they immediately brought her to Jivdaya for treatment.

When we received her, the wound was completely open, and we could literally see the bone. Our team started the necessary treatment by flushing the wound to clean all the maggots, followed by medication and bandages.

“Kamala’ was a real fighter and accepted all the challenges during her recovery. After 15 days of treatment, she was ready to shift to a permanent shelter where she will never have to suffer for food or love.

Dear Friends, Jivdaya Charitable Trust, cannot thank you enough for your assistance. Your genuine support keeps us on our feet to attend to every wildlife in need and deliver our best. We know you have our back in this journey of saving many lives like ‘Kamala.’
