Working to prevent a dam project in Batang Toru

At the Sumatran Orangutan Society, we are constantly on the look out for threats to the virgin rainforest in Sumatra to ensure that orangutans have a safe home.

Around the time that the new Tapanuli orangutan species was described in November 2017, we became aware that an Indonesian government-backed hydropower dam project was planned right in the middle of the Tapanuli orangutan territory.

We commissioned an investigation to identify all of the financial backers to the project, and since then have been lobbying those firms to remove their financial backing.

Since then, we have been funding a campaigning expert to develop a strategy to prevent the construction of this dam.

In theory, the Indonesian government has pledged to make the survival of the Tapanuli orangutan a priority – Pak Wiratno, the director general of Natural Resources and Conservation in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry told the media that a team would be sent to her region to ensure the protection of the species. However, in practice, the Chinese state-run company, Sinohydro, has already started clearing forest in the area where these critically endangered orangutans live.

Once the initial targeted phase of pushing for change from financial backers is complete, we will start a broader approach to prevent the hydropower dam being built. We will keep you posted of any developments and thank you for your support.
