Protecting the Heart of Corcovado

By Francisco Delgado | Executive Director

Corcovado National Park, described by National Geographic as “the most biologically intense place on Earth,” continues to face serious challenges due to chronic underfunding. While illegal hunters, loggers, and miners threaten its fragile ecosystems, park rangers often work with minimal resources. Thanks to the support received through this project, we have been able to take meaningful steps toward improving their capacity to protect the park.

One of the most significant achievements this period was the reconditioning of the kitchen in the Sirena Ranger Station. There was no proper infrastructure for food preparation at the station, despite rangers spending 20-day rotations living deep inside the park. Transporting food, supplies, and materials into such a remote location is extremely complex, requiring boat trips, long hikes, and careful logistical planning. With the materials purchased through this project, the station now has a functional kitchen that directly improves the living conditions, safety, and well-being of the rangers who safeguard Corcovado every day.

In addition, Fundación Corcovado, together with CATUOSA, the Osa Conservation Area, the Municipality of Osa, and several partner institutions, held the first coordination meeting for the upcoming Mega Cleanup of Playa Llorona, scheduled for May 1–4, 2026. This remote beach accumulates enormous amounts of marine debris, and during past cleanups, volunteers have collected around 6 tons of waste. With the participation of more than 100 committed volunteers, we are preparing to carry out this massive effort once again and support the health of one of the park’s most pristine and biologically important coastlines.

These actions are only possible thanks to the generosity of people like you. Your support directly strengthens the protection of one of the world’s most extraordinary natural treasures.

Thank you for standing with Corcovado. Together, we are giving the park, and its wildlife, a fighting chance.
