Protecting Corcovado: Rangers on the Front Line

During May and June 2026, park rangers in Corcovado National Park continued their daily work to protect one of Costa Rica’s most important natural areas. With support from Fundación Corcovado and our donors, rangers are able to maintain a presence in remote areas, conduct patrols, respond to environmental crimes, and protect the extraordinary biodiversity found within the park.

During these two months, the Prevention, Control and Protection Program carried out more than 39 field operations, including land and marine patrols, special operations, investigations, response to reports, mountain expeditions, and wildlife monitoring.

One of the most serious challenges continues to be illegal gold mining. In May alone, park rangers detected three active illegal mining sites where approximately 750 cubic meters of material had been removed—the equivalent of around 94 truckloads. In June, patrols continued to identify active and abandoned mining sites, clandestine camps, equipment, and people associated with these activities. Three people were detained in cases related to illegal mining and irregular occupation of public land, and a firearm was confiscated.

Reaching these areas requires a tremendous effort. In May, rangers completed 1,532 hours of operational work and traveled 700 kilometers. In June, they completed another 1,667 operational hours and 596 kilometers. Together, that represents more than 3,199 hours in the field and 1,296 kilometers traveled in just two months, often through remote and difficult terrain.

Their presence also helps protect Corcovado’s remarkable wildlife. During patrols, rangers recorded species including Baird’s tapirs, jaguars, white-lipped peccaries, and sea turtles. They also responded directly to wildlife emergencies, including providing veterinary attention to an injured tapir and rescuing and relocating a boa constrictor.

This work is strengthened through coordination with Costa Rica’s Public Force, Judicial Investigation Agency, Prosecutor’s Office, and wildlife authorities. These partnerships help ensure that evidence collected in the field can support administrative and judicial processes and that environmental crimes receive the necessary follow-up.

For Fundación Corcovado, supporting the people who protect the park is one of the most direct ways we can contribute to its conservation. Every meal, every supply, and every contribution helps make it possible for rangers to remain in the field and reach places where their presence is urgently needed.

The results from May and June show why this support matters. Behind every kilometer traveled and every hour spent in the forest is a ranger protecting rivers, wildlife, and forests from very real threats.

Thank you for helping us stand with Corcovado’s park rangers and protect this extraordinary place.
