As we prepare to bid farewell to 2021, I’m writing you this update with mixed feelings. It’s not for lack of wonderful news. Indeed, since my last update, the GlobalGiving Coronavirus Relief Fund has raised more than $14 million for global response efforts!

Thanks to your generosity, our latest grant round powered 74 grants totaling $920,000 to communities spread across more than 30 countries.

Yet, as families consider their holiday plans, COVID-19 cases are rising across the US and the world. Scientists and health professionals continue to learn about the latest Omicron variant. And in addition to our pandemic response, the GlobalGiving team is supporting local nonprofit organizations responding to the devastating impacts of tornadoes in the Midwestern US, a super typhoon in the Philippines, and recent flooding in Malaysia.

You and your loved ones have your own story of how 2021 and the pandemic have affected you. During this almost two-year journey, GlobalGiving’s incredible nonprofit partners have brought us hope and sustained their communities:

  • The Safal MRM Foundation team operates the Mabati Medical Centre in Kenya, delivering preventative and curative health services in underserved communities to 35,000 patients in Kilifi County. They’ve partnered with the Kilifi Department of Health to administer COVID-19 vaccines. They’re also training health workers on COVID-19 prevention and vaccination protocols as well as tuberculosis and cancer screening. They believe “quality healthcare services ensure that people are strong, resilient, and focused enough to build better lives.”
  • Amazon Frontlines works with Indigenous communities across Ecuador, Colombia, and Peru. They collaborate with Alianza Ceibo, CONCONAWEP, and the Shuar Communities in the southern Ecuadorian Amazon. To address the longer-term impacts of the pandemic, they’re implementing food and medicinal sovereignty programs. They include an educational component to ensure the transfer of knowledge between elders and youth to grow plants and treat different kinds of illnesses.
  • As the number of COVID-19 cases increases and there is inequitable access to vaccines in Alabama prisons, jails, and detention centers, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is providing vital support to incarcerated individuals. People who are incarcerated are at a greater risk of getting sick or dying from COVID-19. The EJI team provides legal representation to people who have been illegally convicted, unfairly sentenced, or abused in state jails and prisons.

These are just three examples of the tremendous life-saving services our nonprofit grantees are providing in villages, towns, and cities worldwide. You can find a complete list of grantees from the most recent round of Coronavirus Relief Fund grants at the end of this update.

I hope 2022 ushers in the conclusion to the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Come what may, I’m confident that we will take forward the learnings from this year and build on the kindness and generosity you’ve helped cultivate.

In gratitude and solidarity,

Sandrina + the GlobalGiving Team
