Hate crime incidents are on the rise globally, yet the full picture is far from clear due to severe underreporting and inadequate data collection. At ICAAD, we're leveraging data and AI to increase access to information around the prevalence of hate crimes, and identify where the gaps exist, in order to advocate for stronger protections for minority communities globally.
Hate crime incidents are on the rise globally. The rise in the number of hate crimes highlights a failure to protect minority communities. The factors that contribute to this surge include inadequate data collection, limited training of law enforcement to investigate and document hate crimes, and failure to devote resources to monitor domestic extremists with supremacist ideologies.
ICAAD is working to increase access to information around the prevalence of hate crimes in order to advocate for stronger protections for minority communities in the country. We are developing several Dashboards internally and for our local partners to analyze existing hate crimes information and identify where there are inadequacies in data collection and analysis. Using this dashboard, we create specific recommendations to improve reporting.
This project aims to help implement recommendations including enforcing mandatory hate crimes reporting for all law enforcement agencies and developing a National Hate Crimes Task Force that includes community collaboration - in order to reduce hate crimes. We are also exploring the use of AI tools to track the link between hate speech and hate crimes, as well as sentiment analysis of news reports for hate crimes, to augment our data with qualitative information that can help counter hate.
