SPANS continues to serve communities across Goromonzi District , Ruwa and Zimbabwe through mental health education, awareness campaigns, community outreaches, and screening services work that remains central to our mission of improving maternal and perinatal mental health outcomes for women and families. We are pleased to share two significant developments that mark a turning point in our efforts to strengthen Zimbabwe's mental health workforce and expand access to critical services.
Family Therapists Registering with the Health Service Commission
SPANS is proud to report that our family therapists are now in the process of registering with the Health Service Commission (HSC) of Zimbabwe. This milestone directly addresses one of the most pressing challenges facing Zimbabwe's mental health system: the critical shortage of trained human capital in mental health service delivery.
Formal registration with the HSC validates the professional standing of our therapists, strengthens accountability and quality of care, and positions SPANS-trained practitioners to operate within Zimbabwe's national health system with full recognition. Over 200 of our family therapists are currently going through this registration process, representing a direct investment in sustainable, professionally-recognized mental health service capacity for the communities we serve.
Ministry of Health Approves Engagement of SPANS Therapists in National Substance Abuse Response
Zimbabwe faces a severe shortage of mental health professionals relative to population needs. Every therapist who becomes registered and formally engaged by government structures represents a durable increase in national mental health capacity not a one-off intervention, but infrastructure that will continue to serve communities long after any single funding cycle ends.
These developments demonstrate the tangible, systems-level impact that SPANS's work is beginning to achieve, from grassroots community outreach in Ruwa and Goromonzi, to professional recognition at the national level, to formal partnership with government in addressing one of Zimbabwe's most urgent public health challenges.
We invite our donors and partners to be part of this next chapter helping SPANS translate grassroots trust and clinical skill into lasting, recognized mental health infrastructure for Zimbabwe.
