This project will provide 100 covid-19 maternity kits equipped with surgical gloves, medicott sanitary towel, cotton wool, surgical blade, umbilical cord knot, disinfectant, gauze, baby wrapper, baby blanket, bibs, toiletry bag and face mask. The delivery kits will restore dignity of expectant mothers seeking services of unskilled traditional birth attendants. Proper equipment reduces chances of complicated birthing and infections.
Kenya reported its first case of covid-19 in March and 78,512 cases and 1409 deaths so far. With this pandemic, new mothers and newborns have been greeted by harsh containment measures (lockdowns and curfews). Health centers are overwhelmed with response efforts, supply and equipment shortages, and lack of sufficient skilled birth attendants. Health workers, including midwives, are redeployed to treat COVID-19 patients. These measures have disrupted life-saving health services.
We are seeking to procure 100 maternity kits which include the material that expectant mothers use during childbirth. They are mostly used by the mothers, the unskilled traditional birth attendants who are helping mothers in giving birth and newborn babies. The kits will be accompanied by face masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and cost $6. MAMA kits are necessary essentials for families expecting newborn babies but are not easily afforded by pregnant mothers in rural areas.
HAO is partnering with Santa Clara Medical Centre in East Pokot to strengthen quality of healthcare delivery by 25% and improve availability of assisted birth deliveries by 30% by training traditional birth attendants (TBAs) to reverse the trends of high maternal morbidity and mortality rates. Kits' distribution and awareness creation will start upon receipt of funds. TBAs will start visiting households of pregnant women at their third trimester of pregnancy.
