COVID 19 Relief Fund South Africa

COVID 19 Relief Fund South Africa

Summary

This project will give impoverished families food during the coronavirus lockdown in South Africa. As a Children's Charity we work each year into very impoverished communities. Through our preschools, we work with many individuals and families who live with very little money in a regular month and no savings or safety net. In the time of Covid-19 lock down, they have no way to earn crucial income from piece jobs (manual labor). Help us give them vouchers for groceries they need to survive.

Challenge

For many families in South Africa poverty is a heavy reality. The estimated unemployment rate of South Africa is <30%, however the reality in the areas where we work, like the township of Olievenhoutbosch, joblessness is estimated at 80% for 18-35 year olds, in the prime of their working lives! Those who can, work small day labor jobs here and there, however a pandemic like coronovirus and the current lockdown only intensify the problem. There is no savings, no safety net, nowhere to turn.

Solution

The Botshabelo Relief Fund will provide food, medicine and toiletries to impoverished families (both to families directly in our programmes--our preschools and teacher training programme-- and to those in need in the areas where we work). Through the accountability of 20-year-long projects, we can reach where there is serious need to provide effective support based on our relationships and knowledge of the impoverished community setting.

Long-Term Impact

Survival day-to-day is a struggle, and this Relief Fund will help families to survive this lockdown and step into the post-Covid-19 landscape of scenario stronger. They will have had the basics of food, medicine and hygiene, as well as connecting with our emotional/educational support structure. Then together, they will step with us into a South Africa after-coronavirus, together determined to find ways to flourish again.
