Summary

GRACE Cares will provide much needed relief to communities affected by COVID-19 in conjunction with our local heroes who are leading Community Finance Guatemala (CFG) and the Watha Project in Kenya. This initiative will dramatically improve the quality of life and healthcare for the Kakchiquel Maya in Guatemala and the Watha in Kenya in their struggle against the current pandemic.

Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone in the world community, with over 52 million cases and more than 1.3 million deaths. In Guatemala and Kenya people lack Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) knowledge to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and in the case of the Watha, many still don't have access to a safe water source for hygiene reasons. Beyond the negative health impacts, the lockdowns have made it difficult for people in the developing world to survive economically.

Solution

This project will offer technical assistance and material support to Community Finance Guatemala (CFG) and the Watha Project (Kenya) to address the COVID-19 epidemic in their communities. With GRACE Cares's support, CFG will help families build and manage sustainable chicken and family garden systems that are an investment in their resiliency through the ongoing crisis; and the Watha Project will build their third well to serve hundreds in need of a safe water source for hygiene purposes.

Long-Term Impact

Families in Guatemala and Kenya need help to survive the COVID-19 pandemic. The impacts of GRACE Cares and our local heroes providing much needed relief to these communities is the immediate survival of their local members and the long-term sustainability of their way of life. Teaching community members how to stay safe from COVID-19, strengthens community cooperation and means they learn how to prevent other diseases and are better prepared to face new crises, together as a community.
