The COVID 19 Sanitary Pack Drive will support 500 vulnerable girls in Kilifi County, Kenya to help them manage their menstrual health hygienically and in a more dignified way. These girls are currently experiencing difficult times in regard to their menstrual health since most of the places they depended on for the free supply of pads have been closed indefinitely due to the COVID19 pandemic. This project will provide them with a sanitary package; sanitary towels, pants, and bathing soap.
Hundreds of girls and young women from the semi-urban areas of Kilifi County are heavily impacted by the COVID 19 crisis that is currently sweeping the world. This has negatively impacted their ability to manage their menstrual health since they no longer receive the free supply of sanitary towels they used to get through school programs. These put them at high risk to engage in risky sexual behaviors hence teenage pregnancies, dropping out of school, and cases of early marriages.
Providing girls with materials and information on how to manage their menstrual hygiene with dignity will improve their general well being and help them end period poverty in the community. They will be more comfortable to carry out their activities like playing and assisting with family chores. They will build their confidence and talk about menstrual health without shame. This will also help in demystifying myths and misconceptions around monthly periods.
- The project will educate and provide sanitary pack to 500 girls from a sisal plantation settlement to help them with menstrual hygiene management and further combat period poverty in Kilifi County, Kenya.
