Dear Donor,

Thank you for your unwavering support for the LEAP vision since the pandemic started.

Over the years, Through this period, we have learned that leadership—like character—is forged not when things are easy, but when things are difficult. It is in those moments—moments when we choose to give; when we practice love, when we commit to joyful service, rather than surrender—it is in those incremental moments that we make the world a better place for ourselves and others.

The last two years have been tough for everyone - most especially the underprivileged whose source of survival has been cut off due to the pandemic. To date, coupled with the ravaging inflation in the country, many aged women and underserved children still find it difficult to enjoy a complete square meal a day. This is disheartening. Many face uncertainty, separation, and loss.

Unfortunately, this set of people are suffering from a pandemic they hardly know how it originated - Indeed, the poor are the most hit.

LEAP Africa's intervention was at its peak when the pandemic erupted but took a nosedive because of the seeming normalcy experienced only by the privileged in the society. Scores of senior citizens and children still suffer from the effect of the pandemic. Therefore, we are soliciting your continued support to enable us to ignite hope in the lives of those who are most hit by the devastating effect of the pandemic.

Your support of any amount will not only feed and provide clothing to a dying family but will bring joy into their lives and offer them the opportunity to aspire for a better tomorrow.

Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much

When information is truly power…

What was the place of sensitization and awareness? The information they say is power. Some quarters that the virus is an elitist disease, while some believed it was a totally false alarm with the news going around, some quarters that the virus is an elitist disease. Some of our social innovators were at the forefront of creating awareness and sensitizing the people.

Almajiri Child Rights Initiative is an advocacy and educational support platform that amplifies the call for social inclusion of vulnerable children in Northern Nigeria. Mohammed Sabo Keana, founder and his team were on the ground to educate and sensitize almajiri children in Abuja and its suburbs while also providing them with food and safety materials.

At one of the outreaches to the Oke Aro Community in Lagos State, the Chairman of the community expressed his appreciation. He noted that the sensitization would go a long way in empowering his people to understand the authentic stories about the virus and the right guidelines to follow. He also noted that the relief materials will serve as an incentive for the community dwellers always to remember to uphold the guidelines and reflect on the dangers of non-adherence in the fight against the deadly virus.

Five weeks, nine states, over 2,000 households and more than 8,000 individuals spread across different communities; all of these would not have been possible without the collaboration and support from Citi and Dow Chemical. Thank you to all the social innovators who are working tirelessly on the frontline; Lagos Food Bank Initiative, Cato Foods, NATAL Cares, Ashake Foundation, RUDERF, 100,000 Smiles Project, Vicfold Recycling, ACRI, Sonocare healthcare, Mamamoni Limited, Dreams from the Slum, Hope Behind Bars Africa. No time in the history of the world has collaboration across sectors - public, private, development mattered the most than now, when we have all come to understand the true meaning of the world being a global village.

There is no better time than now also to take on the mantle of personal leadership. If each one can reach one… no effort is too small.

Giving hope to the vulnerable in a pandemic

Happy New year.

The LEAP Africa COVID-19 Response launched out with a goal; to work through our network of social innovators and alumni members to reduce the pandemic's impact on the most vulnerable communities across Nigeria. Below are some of the actions we took:

Mamamoni is a Fintech social enterprise in Lagos to empower low-income rural and urban women with instant money loans to support/start small businesses. Nkem, the founder of Mamamoni, supported her network of women who depend on their daily income to survive and support their families. Their livelihoods were threatened, with their families at the risk of starvation.

Hope behind bars Africa provides access to justice for underserved inmates in Abuja. At the onset of the pandemic, with the restrictions placed on prison visits by the prison authorities, Funke, the founder of Hope Behind Bars, supported the inmates with food, toiletries and other essential daily needs.

Working with twelve social innovators across different states in Nigeria, sharing hope and love in bags of goodies, the vision for LEAP Africa COVID-19 response was to ensure that no family went to bed hungry. Mrs Agnes, a 65-year old widow who depends mostly on gifts from people to survive, lamented that the hope of receiving gifts from visitors was almost non-existent due to movement restrictions, and she had resigned herself to fate. However, during one of the outreaches, she happened to be a beneficiary.

After receiving her package, with her grandson's help, she was moved to tears and prayed fervently for the donors. The echoes were the same everywhere; Lagos, Kwara, Abuja, Kano, Nasarawa, Osun, Ondo, Delta, and Rivers.

Many community dwellers said they were weighed down not just by the fear of the virus itself but also by the uncertainty of where their next meal would come from. With 3,933 households and 17,588 individuals, we are grateful for your support on this journey, and together, we can do so much more.
