COVID-19 poses tremendous threat to the rare disease community owning to their susceptibility as a result of their underlying conditions and the disruption in the healthcare system. Many of them have been affected by job loss or reduced work hours which has caused a strain on their finances. Most of them are in desperate need of support as the pandemic is intensifying their already harsh realities. This project will help to provide vital support to some members of the rare disease community.
Most people living with rare diseases and their families are experiencing substantial life disruptions including financial instability. This is making it difficult for them to meet some basic needs or even acquire basic PPEs to protect themselves. With the easing of restrictions, Person's living with rare diseases have become more vulnerable. There are no special accommodations being made for them by their employers or even the government which is affecting their quality of life.
Rare Disease Ghana initiative is going to assist families of rare disease patients who have been financially affected by the virus by providing them with some relief items. All donations will be used in procuring PPEs, hygiene supplies, hand sanitizers etc. to needy members of the rare disease community. This will benefit patients who do not have extra income to cater for certain needs and provide them with the necessary protection.
These interventions are necessary because they will help to prevent long term complications that would arise in these families and community as a result of neglect, hardship and economic instability. PPEs will also help to safeguard this vulnerable and more susceptible group from being exposed to the virus so as to prevent dire consequences in the near future. Income that would have been spent on PPEs can now be saved for other items. This project will help save lives of rare disease patients.
