Nearly 800,000 Californian children who received special education services are facing devastating long term consequences. Families are severely impacted by parents having to work and in turn being unable to assist their children and young adults with online learning. Students with behavioral issues are unable to sit in front of a computer for extended periods of time. Children are being neglected or left alone at home. There are also high stress levels, anxiety and sometimes abuse.

The lack of support and resources, paired with extra care responsibilities during COVID-19, may compound the physical and mental health challenges already experienced by many parents of children with disabilities. There is a higher risk of anxiety, depression, neglect and substance abuse. Students need consistency to learn or they revert to old behaviors. Online learning does not support their need to help them learn and process in their home setting. They need the structure of school programs.
