The lockdown in wake of COVID- 19 has been particularly catastrophic for the poor and those falling in the daily wage bracket. Within this group too, the most severely affected are the women, especially young girls and senior citizens primarily above the age of 50 who have no money to survive. With essentials commodities like ration, medicines and daily hygiene products already difficult to access, the lockdown has further reduced their ability and opportunity to procure these items.

With essentials commodities like ration, medicines and daily hygiene products already difficult to access, the lockdown has further reduced their ability and opportunity to procure these items.
This project aims to support this group in the slums of Kolkata. The primary goal of the project will be to provide dry ration supplies for senior citizens, hygiene kits for women and girls, medicines and basic family support to individuals and families who are struggling to make ends meet. Kolkata Initiatives already works with almost 200 senior citizens in these slums with Women Community Centers already set up.
The lockdown as it is evolving will lead to a number of basic requirements becoming scarce and given that women and girls particularly the young and senior citizens are dependent on their environment and families for support, the impact on them is going to be palpable. To help counter and mitigate this situation, this project will work directly with and within the affected communities to build stock and support this group to get through this difficult time.
