End of Financial Fear

By Eugenia Cechi | National Partnerships Executive

End Of Financial Fear

It is hard to believe that hunger is happening in Australia, the ‘lucky country’. It’s a predicament largely hidden by stigma and shame, but the reality is we’re all likely to know someone who is affected. This has never been truer than now, with more people than ever being unable to provide for themselves and their families.  The steady stream of people coming into Foodbank hubs in recent months for the basics - bread, milk, pasta, rice, fruit and vegetables, nappies, period care items, etc - highlighted once again the real-life consequences of the cost-of-living crisis.

For a growing number of Australian households, food has become that “something special”, only to be purchased when there is money left after all the other expenses are accounted for. This is the case for Mary and her 5 beautiful children, who have recently escaped family violence. Mary and her children are now in a rental property, safe in their own home, but it's costing her almost $500 a week in rent, and she can't get enough hours of work to afford food. When she’s able to, she drives 45 minutes to visit Foodbank, excited about being able to give her children fresh fruit after school. That’s her gift to her children. Not an X-box. Not new shoes. A fresh, crunchy apple, and some carrots and cauliflower for dinner.

Not only is this affecting the community, but it’s also affecting the cost of foodbanking – it costs us more to source, store and transport food and groceries at a time when demand has never been higher. This is why we need your support more than ever, to help community members like Mary and her children put food on the table. Donate before the End of Financial Year (30 June) to help those doing it tough avoid financial fear. Every dollar donated creates two meals for someone in need.

Thank you in advance for your support.
