The Foodbank Hunger Report 2024 revealed that food insecurity in Australia is at its most critical level since the cost-of-living crisis began.
Food insecurity directly affects the health and wellbeing of individuals, impacting their nutrition, self-worth, social relationships and overall standard of living. More than half of the 3.4 million food insecure households in Australia are at the severe end of the food insecurity spectrum, suffering from disrupted eating patterns, skipping meals or going entire days without eating. Single-parent households continue to face a particularly alarming rate of hardship, with 69% facing food insecurity and 41% experiencing the severest form. Food insecurity is also being felt more acutely in the regions (37%) compared to metropolitan areas (30%).
Behind these numbers are families, children, and individuals—real people in our communities who need our help.In particular, children going hungry across Australia experience poorer concentration at school, have less energy for sports, are embarrassed to invite friends over and struggle with homework. This short video shows the impact of your generous support. Stories like this are why we do what we do.
Foodbank continues to provide essential food and groceries to more than 1 million Australians every month. We work with the entire Australian food and grocery sector to distribute food to a network of over 2,929 frontline charities nationally, as well as directly to individuals through Foodbank hubs in some states. Foodbank supports school children by providing food for school breakfast programs in 3,220 primary and high schools, alongside lunch programs in some states.
"It filled me with an overwhelming sense of relief. At this time I would not eat food so my daughter never went hungry. Foodbank helped me take care of myself so I could take care of her.” - Briony, WA
Thank you for your generous support. Together, we’ve already achieved so much, but there is more to be done.
Our goal is to raise $8 million by June, enabling us to provide an additional 16 million meals for Australians in need. We’ve made progress, but still urgently need $3 million to ensure food relief reaches every corner of the country. Every $1 donated creates two meals for people in need.
Thank you again for your unwavering dedication to supporting those in need. Together, we can continue to make a life-changing impact for Australians facing hardship.
