This project will educate and support Malawian people in city of Lilongwe and in rural communities about Covid 19; recognising the symptoms of the virus, how to reduce the risk of getting the virus and what should be done if they catch the virus. It will provide information, education and resources to support vulnerable people in a country with very compromised facilities in how to manage the virus.
The corona virus has affected the whole world with many people dying. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and will be affected by this epidemic. Testing and tracking the disease is not an option for the majority of Malawians. Basic facilities such as running water for hand washing are not readily available. Access to information about how to avoid, prevent and manage the disease is limited in both towns and rural communities. This BFM project aims to address these difficulties.
The main focus of this project is to educate people about the virus and also to provide resources that will help people to protect themselves from catching this virus. People will be taught and given the materials and resources to make protective masks. They will be given soap and buckets to wash hands and they will be informed in a variety of ways about the many recommendations from the WHO about how people can avoid catching this virus and what to do if someone does catch it.
The long term effect of this project is to control the spread of this virus and minimise its impact. We will teach and resource 500 people how to make and sew protective masks. This will then be shared out across the city and will extend to provision in villages in rural areas enabling others to sew the masks. We will make posters showing correct hand washing, provide soap and buckets and cleaning materials. Our key staff will provide information about social distancing and self isolation.
