Nigeria generates over 32 million tons of waste each year, yet less than 10% is recycled. Youth in slum and low-income areas face high unemployment and few opportunities. This project will train 2,000 young people in waste collection, sorting, and recycling into sellable products. They will earn income while reducing pollution in their communities. With immediate training and tools, these youth can turn waste into livelihoods.
Nigeria struggles with high youth unemployment and poor waste management. Most waste ends up in streets, open dumps, or waterways, causing flooding, disease, and pollution. At the same time, young people lack jobs and income, leaving them vulnerable to poverty and crime. Without training and access to tools, they cannot turn waste into a source of income, even though the recycling market is growing.
The project will train 2,000 youth in waste collection, sorting, and recycling methods. Each participant will receive basic safety gear, starter kits, and guidance on turning recyclable materials into income. By connecting youth to buyers of recycled products, they will have immediate opportunities to earn. At the same time, their work will reduce waste in streets and improve community health.
With skills in recycling, youth will have steady income sources and reduced dependence on unstable jobs. Cleaner neighborhoods will result as more waste is diverted from dumps and waterways. In the future, trained youth can create small recycling businesses that employ others, multiplying the effect of the project. This combination of livelihood creation and cleaner surroundings will benefit both families and communities.
