Summary

This project aims to train 150 vulnerable girls in market-targeted vocational skills such as computer training, baking, sewing, beadmaking, etc., and provide them with financial literacy and business management skills. The project will also provide financial support to beneficiaries in the form of seed grants and support 50 adolescent girls to return to and finish secondary education. The project's strategic goal is to create opportunities for girls, not spouses.

Challenge

Nigeria has the highest number of child brides in Africa, with an estimated 23 million girls married before the age of 18. Most rural families marry off their daughters early to lessen their financial burdens. Sometimes girls are left doing home chores, hawing for money, and not attending school. Consequently, they lack the ability to make decisions relating to their own bodies, health, education, and finances within their households. This undermine girls' voice/agency and opportunity to grow.

Solution

The project will support 200 vulnerable young women and girls with market-oriented vocational skills, provide financial literacy and business management skills to enable beneficiaries to succeed in their chosen vocation. The project will also provide a seed grant to beneficiaries to enable them to start their businesses after training. This project will also provide financial assistance to help 50 dropout adolescent girls return to and finish secondary education.

Long-Term Impact

Improving income and economic opportunities for 150 girls, and enrolling back 50 dropout girls to school will strengthen their voice and agency, resulting in improved women's empowerment and gender equality. This will also help to break the cycle of poverty both for the girls, their families and the community at large.
