By Fay Pretty | PeaceJam UK Coordinator & Youth Team Leader
With the support of our GlobalGiving donors, we have been reaching a new wave of changemakers starting their PeaceJam journey and supporting current young leaders to develop their skills and impact.
Between the 16th and the 20th of February, PeaceJam UK visited The Peterborough School, Ackworth School, The Mount School York and the CATCH Youth Centre in Leeds. Running multiple workshops and facilitating small group discussions, as well as hosting a Youth Team Training Day at The University of Bradford. Despite already being familiar with PeaceJam, and having started our various curricula, going into these schools allowed us to be able to support staff and students in transitioning from theoretical discussion to implementing social action.
“In a world of seemingly continuous suffering and conflict, it is easy to forget about what actions of Peace have been made and what can be made. This is why I have taken an interest in PeaceJam as I hope to be able to transition from wanting/thinking about making a difference and actually trying to. In talking to Luke and Fay it was really inspiring to see two people talk so passionately about Peace and about encouraging young people to take action for social justice. We were provided with valuable and clear insight as to what to do with our interests and how to funnel our ideas into actual action.” Adam, Student.
We have also been working with new youth groups and schools to start them on their PeaceJam journey to becoming young leaders. On the 1st of March, PeaceJam UK ran two workshops at a one-day event in partnership with the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE) on the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight reports a higher-than-average level of child poverty, 34.2 per cent which is equal to 8,379 children, compared to the national average of 29.2 per cent. PeaceJam worked with students from across four different Isle of Wight secondary schools to empower youth by kickstarting the PeaceJam six-week Social Action Programme to tackle issues areas directly affecting them.
Students are also excited about our upcoming PeaceJam Conference on the 3rd of July at the University of Winchester. This opportunity will bring youth together from diverse backgrounds to be mentored by near-peer positive university student role models. They will also have the chance to learn more about issue areas they are passionate about during workshops chosen by our Youth Team, who are showcasing the leadership skills they've gained from the PeaceJam Programme to the next wave of youth.
None of this would be possible without the support of our GlobalGiving donors, thank you for making this possible.
