Summary

Hurricane Dorian, the most destructive storm on record in The Bahamas, wreaked unimaginable devastation in Abaco. The compounding effects of a global pandemic has made it difficult to recover. We are working closely with community leaders to understand the needs of those impacted by Hurricane Dorian. Food security and community building are at the top of the list. Our Community Gardens, Backyard Farms Program, Breakfast Program and Youth Sports and Music Programs directly address those needs.

Challenge

The Abaco Islands were severely impacted by Hurricane Dorian in 2019, causing catastrophic damage and leaving 87 percent of the area devastated leading to significant economic losses. As we continue our efforts to rebuild, the Abaco community faces the challenge of not only restoring what was lost but also doing so in a sustainable manner. It is crucial to ensure that the rebuilding efforts prioritize sustainability, taking into account the long-term well-being of the region and its residents.

Solution

By supplying the tools and supplies needed to Backyard and Commercial Farmers, we are enabling families and individuals to grow their own food and directly increase food security and income potential. Our Breakfast and Youth Sports Programs are providing the best chance for academic and personal success through nutrition and exercise. Our Monthly Farmers Market offers a platform for Small Business Owners to start or expand their business, and helps to create a sustainable local food system.

Long-Term Impact

Sustainable farming practices will reduce the need for imports, reduce the cost of food, and improve nutrition. The Farmers Market enables entrepreneurs and small business owners to grow and produce their own products in Abaco, reducing the dependency on imports and stimulating the local economy. Children will be empowered to succeed in school with a nutritious breakfast, and learn to be part of a team and work towards a common goal through sports and music programs.
